A Little Bit About the Susan Johnson Studio of Voice

Formally established in 1996, the Susan Johnson Studio of Voice has been key in preparation for the vocal success of many students throughout Northwest Washington, offering voice lessons in Bellingham. Although most students come from Whatcom and Skagit Counties, some come from as far away as Seattle and Vancouver BC for their voice lessons. The youngest age I generally work with is 13, but I will occasionally work with a slightly younger student. There is no age limit on the other end of the spectrum! I will prepare students to feel more confident and comfortable with their voice, whether it’s for around the house, in church, for solo singing, for the Bellingham Music Club Scholarship Competition, for the San Juan District WMEA Solo/Ensemble competition, for choral singing, for drama/musical ons, competitions, productions, for college entrance auditions or for recitals.
The voice studio is located on the lower level of my home in Bellingham.  The entire space is totally dedicated to the voice studio and my extensive music library.  I have many reference materials, and we frequently use them!  I willingly loan my books, recordings and other materials out to students. I have stereo equipment for listening to recordings (including a turntable), and a great recording device that records students’ vocal lessons directly onto an SD card which you can then download on your laptop, for practicing and for reviewing a lesson.  I also record accompaniments for repertoire being studied when necessary.  It’s also very helpful when it comes to learning a foreign text.

Some High Points and Successes

I am very proud to state that my students have taken 1st place in the Bellingham Music Club’s "Lena Montgomery Vocal Scholarship Competition” 6 years in a row. In honor of a great man and his beautiful wife, this competition has been renamed to the "Jack and Virginia Frymire" scholarship competition. These lovely singers are: Shaya Greathouse (twice), Kim Turpin, Lydia Wassan, and Lindsey Nakatani (twice).  Many of my students have won 1st place at the San Juan District WMEA Solo/Ensemble competition (Daria Harper, Lydia Wassan, Shannon McGuiness, Josephine Vorenkamp, Paul Gauger, Lindsey Nakatani, Rosamund Dyer, Maura Schaefer Christopher Nakatani), and gone on to place in the top 3 at the State Finals in Ellensburg, WA. Through the years it has been an honor to help many graduating seniors prepare for their College auditions and music scholarships.  A former student, Miss Lindsey Nakatani, has graduated from The Juilliard School in New York City, and is completing her Masters Degree and the Mannes School of Music in Manhattan. Miss Shaya Greathouse has completed her graduate studies at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Many students have continued their vocal studies at varied and various colleges including ~ Ithaca College (NY), Biola Conservatory (CA), Whitman College (WA), Stanford (CA), Seattle Pacific University, Washington State University and Western Washington University. I have worked with a student as young as 11, Miss Daria Harper, preparing her for the lead/title role in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors performed with the Whatcom Chorale.  (I also played Piano II in those performances).  Many, many other adult students have been frequent soloists with the Bellingham Chamber Chorale and the Whatcom Chorale  (Shawn Warner, Connie Shultz, Chris Galbraith, Debbie Brinson, Marty Hitchcock, Beth Wallace, Shelly Swenson, Leith Swenson and Yvonne Durham.)

A Little Bit About Me Susan Johnson Studio of Voice

I have been heavily involved in the Bellingham music scene since my return from overseas to the Northwest in 1991, and have been active as both a singer (Bellingham Festival of Music Chorus and Chamber Chorus,[www.bellinghamfestival.org] The Bellingham Chamber Chorale [www.bellinghamchamberchorale.org] and The Whatcom Chorale), a volunteer (Bellingham Festival of Music Chorus Manager and Board Member) and a Voice Teacher (Private Studio and Western Washington University Affiliate Faculty). My goal as your voice teacher is to give you the vocal freedom to have fun with your singing, to gain the confidence and skills to achieve your goals, at whatever level that may be.  I truly believe everyone has the ability to improve their singing voice.
